Get a sequence, not just a date

Ask the contractor to explain the planned order of assessment, permit, utility booking, electrical work, inspection or authorization and reconnection. Identify which bookings are confirmed and which remain dependent on another step. Keep the anticipated outage separate from a promised completion time. The sequence should name the party responsible at each handoff and provide a contact if the expected arrangement changes.

Describe household outage needs

Tell the contractor about heating, refrigeration, access controls, remote work and other routines affected by a power interruption. If anyone depends on electrically powered medical equipment, arrange an appropriate continuity plan with their equipment provider or care team before the booking. Ask what preparations the household should complete in advance. Do not improvise a connection from a generator, battery or vehicle to household wiring.

Keep utility handling with the utility

Calgary / ENMAX requirement: ENMAX reserves utility metering and service connection handling to its own crews. Its maintenance guidance prohibits third parties from removing utility meter seals or meters and from disconnecting or reconnecting utility service conductors. Your role is to arrange access and understand the schedule. There is no homeowner shortcut for disconnecting a service or making the panel safe for work.

Understand the reconnect dependencies

ENMAX's reconnect information identifies permit and inspection or City authorization requirements where applicable. Its maintenance guidance also sets conditions involving the attending certified electrician and safe access to the service equipment. Have the contractor confirm the pathway for your project. ENMAX warns that emergency response can take precedence over scheduled work. Ask whom to contact and what the household plan is if the outage lasts longer than expected.

Request a useful handover

After the work, ask the contractor to explain the completed scope, circuit directory, operating information and remaining items. Obtain the relevant permit and inspection records rather than assuming restored power closes every part of the job. Note any follow-up appointment and its owner. Keep the final documentation with the equipment information so a later electrician, buyer or insurer can understand what changed without relying on a verbal recollection.

Questions before the outage booking

  • Which appointments are confirmed and which depend on another step?
  • Who should I contact if the expected reconnect arrangement changes?
  • What household preparations and access arrangements are needed, and which completion documents will be provided after the work?
