Use the rules for your address

Electrical permit eligibility varies across Canada. Identify the municipality or authority responsible for your property and ask the prospective contractor which permit process applies to the actual scope. A generic homeowner-renovation article is not enough for a main-service change. Keep panel replacement, branch-circuit work and utility work distinct when you describe the project so the answer addresses the work you intend to commission.

Understand the Calgary boundary

Calgary requirement: ordinary homeowner electrical permissions exclude installing, altering or modifying the main electrical service, including the main panel, main breaker and meter base. The City also says that contractors cannot work under homeowner permits; they obtain their own. Do not arrange a homeowner permit to stand in for the hired contractor's responsibility. Ask the City directly if a special qualification or unusual property situation affects eligibility.

Identify the accountable permit holder

Alberta context: the Safety Codes Council identifies master electricians as the contractors who can obtain electrical permits in the province and describes their responsibility for permitted work. Ask the business who holds the permit for your project and how that person oversees the work. Keep the permit holder's role separate from the sales contact and anyone who attends the home. Do not infer qualifications from a website badge alone.

Agree the inspection and utility handoffs

Ask who applies for the permit, books inspections, responds to deficiencies and coordinates any disconnect/reconnect. Put those responsibilities in the written scope. Confirm how you will receive the permit number and the relevant completion records. An issued permit, an inspection booking and an inspection result are different events. Keeping them separate helps prevent an apparently finished installation from leaving unresolved administrative or reconnect requirements.

Keep a simple project record

Save the accepted scope, contractor contact, permit number, assessment, inspection documents and any written changes in one folder. Record information you cannot yet obtain as pending. Before handover, ask what work the records cover and whether anything remains to be corrected or reviewed. This guide organizes your questions; it does not certify a contractor, determine compliance or replace the authority's decision about the installation.

Questions before you commission the work

  • Who is the named permit holder for this project?
  • Which inspections and utility appointments does the proposed scope require?
  • Who supplies the records and resolves an outstanding item if the physical installation is finished before every approval is complete?
