Types of Breakers

Branch circuit breakers for residential electrical panels.

There are four basic types of standard breakers regardless of the brand of your panel and they all have their own purpose.

Single Pull Breaker

Single Pull Breakers

Single Pull Breakers have been around since the beginning of breaker panels and are used for 120 volt basic circuit at either 15 or 20 amp circuits. In your home there are other ampacity rated single pull breakers however these are the day to day used breakers.

These breakers are commonly used for items like lighting, general receptacles, certain kitchen appliances, bathroom circuits.

Two pull breaker

Two Pull Breakers

Two Pull Breakers are used for items requiring 240 volts at different ampacity. The most common two pull breakers are 15-20-30-40-amp rating, which are used for stoves, dryers, Air Conditioning units, car chargers, hot tubs, split circuits among other peripherals.

Tandem Breaker

Tandem Breakers

Tandem breakers are designed to make the most of the space in your panels. They also come in many different ampacity ratings as configurations. They are used for 120 volts rated circuits and are used just like single pull breakers. Their main purpose is to make room in a panel that is challenged for space. Some older panels depending on the make and model might not have this as an option However all newer Electrical Panels have this capacity to except tandem breakers

Some older panels depending on the make and model might not have this as an option However all newer Electrical Panels have this capacity to except Quad Breakers.
